WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW BEFORE BUYING A LED SCREEN?

VIEWING DISTANCE FOR LED SCREENS
The viewing distance is an important value to define the interval between two possible pixels. For example, if we have a 3 x 2m screen, we can choose a pixel pitch of 10 mm if we want an optimal vision from 8 m away. But if we want to reduce its viewing distance, making it closer, then it’s better to choose a pixel pitch of 8 mm.
SO, IS IT ALWAYS BETTER TO GET THE SMALLER PIXEL PITCH?
Not really. Remember that smaller pitches are more expensive. If we take the previous example (3×2 m LED screen) and set 10 m viewing distance, the image quality will be the same, whether the pixel pitch is 10 mm or 8 mm. Choosing a smaller pixel when it is not necessary is a waste of money.
LED SCREEN BRIGHTNESS
Advertising LED screens have a higher brightness than LED TVs and other screens. Brightness is measured by using nits or candelas per m2. The higher the luminosity level, the higher the level of brightness.
Screens with higher brightness are pricier and use more electrical power. Hence, it is important to choose a screen with the right brightness for your needs, so you won’t pay more for something that is not necessary. Non-weatherproof indoor LED screens use LEDs with lower light output, but water-resistant outdoor LED screens need to use brighter LEDs.
HOW TO CHOOSE THE BEST PIXEL PITCH FOR A LED SCREEN
When buying a LED screen, doubts often arise. One of the most common is how to select the right pixel pitch. It is natural to want to get the best image quality. In fact, it is easy to find examples of bad pixel pitch choices: distorted images that cannot be perceived correctly at any distance.
Some people (and sellers) believe that distance from the screen is the only variable that matters to get the best image quality. They mistakenly calculate pixel pitch based only on this and do not think about the size of the LED screen.
As technical advice, the first thing you have to do is to calculate the total number of pixels that has the screen we want to buy. The amount cannot be less than 30.000 pixels.
HOW DO WE CALCULATE THE TOTAL NUMBER OF PIXELS ON A SCREEN?
Very simple: you can check how many pixels are in one square meter of each pitch in the following table.
For example, if we want a screen of 2×1 m, it’s necessary to convert the size into square meters, which is done multiplying the base measurement by the height measurement. The surface of a 2×1 m screen is 2 m2. Now, we have to look for a pixel pitch value that, after being multiplied by the surface size, gives us a value greater than 30,000 pixels. Let’s multiply the surface of our screen by the 10 mm pixel pitch (equivalent to 10.000 pixels/m2, according to the previous table). 2 m2 x 10.000 pixels/m2 = 20.000. Therefore, this value would not be valid for video: it would only be suitable for text viewing.
If you still have doubts about the pixel pitch you would need, it is better to get professional advice from experts with a long experience and hundreds of successful projects.
INDOOR AND OUTDOOR LED SCREENS BRIGHTNESS
One of the most common misconceptions is related to the confusion between brightness and weather protection. This error is induced by dishonest sellers who offer expensive and excessive outdoor LED screens to customers who do not need them, just to get a higher commission. The deception consists in not informing that there are indoor screens with higher brightness, that can look as bright and sharp as outdoor screens
These indoor LED screens do not have weather resistant features because they do not need it. This can save you a lot of money, because it makes the price of the screen much higher. The truth is that screen brightness is completely independent of its weather protection.
WHAT IS THE MAINTENANCE ACCESS OF LED SCREENS?
The maintenance access tells us where you can find and access the elements inside the screen.
Rear maintenance screens require a space behind the screen to get inside access. Sometimes, these screens can incorporate doors that must be fully operative to perform maintenance tasks. If you are installing a rear maintenance LED screen, be sure to leave the space necessary for staff access and door opening.
LED frontal maintenance screens are designed for wall installations or similar, where we will access their internal parts from the front. The frontal maintenance screens are slightly more expensive than those of the rear type, due to the mechanisms they integrate to grant a frontal access.
WHAT ARE THE BEST BRANDS OF LEDS FOR SCREENS?
Brand names are not a way to measure good quality, it is better to look for reliability. The reliability of a LED model is measured in rates per thousand. The higher rate per thousand, the better quality and reliability of the led.
